Effie K. Basdra received her Dental Degree from the School of Dentistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She graduated from Columbia University Dental School, New York, NY, USA where she was trained in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. She obtained her Doctorate Degree and her Habilitation title (Priv.Doz.) from the University of Heidelberg Medical School, Germany.
Her research focus is on cellular and molecular mechanisms underpinning mechanotransduction events in various cells types, mainly in bone cells and vascular endothelium. For her work she was awarded many national and international prizes, among them the prestigious Arnold Biber Prize from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für kieferorthopädie. She has published extensively on the signal tranduction mechanisms of mechanical strain on cells.
She holds editorial board positions and serves as reviewer in basic research journals and specific research on the biological basis of craniofacial pathophysiology. She is presently Associate Professor at the University of Athens Medical School and Director of the Cellular and Molecular Biomechanics Unit.
