IKY-Fulbright scholar, Sotiris Pilafidis, shares his experience with us!

Sotiris Pilafidis is an IKY-Fulbright scholar for the academic year 2023-2024. He is conducting his research at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of the Aegean, in Myrina, Lemnos. His research focuses on the valorization of agro-industrial waste and residues using fungi.

“When the results of the IKY-Fulbright scholarship for Greek doctoral candidates were announced, I saw my name on the list of selected candidates, and at first, I couldn’t believe it.

Having returned to Greece after six months at UC Davis, I now fully appreciate how multifaceted and valuable this experience has been for me. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work at a distinguished American university, surrounded by researchers from around the world, each coming from diverse scientific disciplines with different objectives. I was able to expand my knowledge and technical skills.

Most importantly, I gained insight into different ways of thinking and approaches to research hypotheses. I participated in interdisciplinary training sessions, field visits, and trips to biotechnology companies that collaborate closely with academia to develop the technologies of tomorrow. I experienced the fast-paced American lifestyle and the multicultural society of California.

I now realize that the challenges I faced were valuable life lessons, and the friendships I made will stay with me wherever I go. IKY and Fulbright Greece were always by my side, and I am deeply grateful for that. Participating in this joint scholarship program is an opportunity I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone.”
